Smoke filled the air and settled low with the cooler air hanging in the valley by State Route 82 and Chase Road where a large mulch pile had been smoldering. The pile spontaneously combusted after being piled so large. Ancram Fire Company was called woth Taghkanic Fire Company at approximately 8:30 on Sunday morning. Residents in the area had called about the smoke lingering in the area and crews were dispatched to help extinguish the piles. Workers on scene helped with heavy equipment turning and moving the piles. 79-20 using three blitz fires or ground monitors and two large portable water tanks flowed over 100,000 gallons of water. Tankers from Ancram, 79-30 and 79-31 with Taghkanic 56-30, 56-31 and 56-33 delivered the tanker loads from a nearby water source. Crews remained on scene observing and flowing water until approximately 1 in the afternoon. Once operations had ceased cleanup of tarps, hoses and trucks began at the firehouses as well as with the refueling of trucks and tankers.
