Fire Prevention Starts With YOU!

The Ancram Fire Company wants you to be safe. Use these tips and information to better keep you and your family safe.

Fire Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

When it comes to fire prevention, fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are essential. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of a home including the basement. Fire alarms are a fire safety precaution that all homeowners and landlords in our community need to take to protect you and your family from fire.

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that can kill you if inhaled. You cannot see it, smell it, or taste it. The symptoms of CO poisoning are flu like, including headache, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, and confusion. Prolonged exposure can result in vomiting, blackouts, and eventually, brain damage and death. Every home should be equipped with at least one CO alarm near the sleeping area. For maximum protection, additional alarms should be located on each level of your home.

For more on carbon monoxide detectors and the dangers of CO this link will bring you to an informational brochure

Control Burns and preventing fires

Open burning is the single greatest cause of brush fires in NYS. The spring burn ban was implemented in 2009, and runs this year from March 16 through May 14.

exceptions to the burn ban are

-    Campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed.
-    Small cooking fires are allowed.
-    Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires are allowed.

BEFORE ATTEMPTING A BURN PLEASE REPORT YOUR INTENTIONS TO

the 911 Office at 518-828-1263 to report that you are conducting a burn.  Dispatch staff will take your name, address and telephone number.

Considerations to be made when attempting a controlled burn,

  • Is it windy? If so, consider burning another day.
  • Clear an area 10 to 15 feet around the burn site.
  • Do not use gasoline or other flammable liquids to start a fire.
  • Keep the fire small enough so you can control it.
  • Do not leave the fire unattended.
  • Maintain a means of communication at the site. (cell phone, etc.)
  • Have a plan to extinguish the fire like a garden hose, buckets of water, flat shovel or broom, etc.
  • When done, make sure the fire is completely out.

Fire Safety for Inside

Safety tips for candles in the home can be found here. Candle Safety

Most important safety tips for having candles in and around your home are as follows,

  • Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or before going to sleep.
  • Keep candles away from items that may catch fire such as clothing, books, curtains, Christmas trees, etc.
  • Keep matches, lighters, and candles up high out of reach of children.

For information of keeping your family safe during the holidays with a Chirstmas tree, learn more here. Christmas tree safety
